Cleveland-Ah, the old stereotype of the gay man as cultural maven, creative maestro, artistic genius.

It would probably be sad that this characterization has continued this long, were it

not so very, very true.

Pink Martini, the lounge-jazz-dance-film noir orchestra out of Portland, Oregon, is making another stop in Ohio to raise funds for worthy causes.

The ensemble was last seen in the Buckeye State in February, when they performed with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.

This time around, the troupe, led by Harvard-educated, openly gay pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale, will play a benefit for the Cleveland Museum of Art. Given the amount of renovations that grand dame of the Cleveland cultural scene is undergoing, she can use the money. By the time all is said and done, it will be harder to recognize the museum than Joan Rivers (although hopefully the end result will be far more attractive).

The September 10 show will feature Pink Martini's trademark blend of world music, lounge and jazz. Their mélange of styles earned them the description: "Somewhere

fice or even his supporting role in Anchorman would lead one to believe he could handle. This is far from the broad humor of The 40-Year Old Virgin.

Frank is the nation's pre-eminent Proust scholar. He fell in love with a grad student. He lost the grad student to his primary professional rival. He even runs into the grad student in a gas station on the way to Redondo Beach.

The movie's title refers, in a campy, sarcastic way, as much to the suicidally depressed gay uncle as it does to the young beauty pageant contestant.

between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brasilian marching street band and Japanese film noir."

While it's usually considered tacky to take descriptions directly from press releases, after listening to the band's most recent album, Hang On Little Tomato, the press release describes them more succinctly than any mere mortal.

Were Lauderdale and his crew less talented, one might expect different versions of "The Girl from Ipanema" on each album they release.

Instead, there are songs with full Japanese choruses, Piaf-inflected paeans to days gone by and throaty ballads that would have Nina Simone crying into her cosmopolitan.

"An Evening with Pink Martini," presented by the Women's Council of the Cleveland Museum of Art, will be at 7 pm on Sunday, September 10. A reception at 5:30 pm will precede the show.

Tickets are $75, $100 for premier seating. The show will be in Gartner Auditorium at the museum, 11150 East Boulevard in Cleveland. For tickets, call 216-421-7350 or go to www.clevelandart.org.

Abigail Breslin, though, does deserve major congratulations on her performance. There are a handful of comedies, indie or otherwise, that have portrayed young girls realistically (Welcome to the Dollhouse and Donnie Darko are two that spring to mind), and Olive is a remarkably well-rounded character, dealing with conflicting emotions and doubts believably and in a way that does not make the snarkier members of the audience wish violent, gruesome death upon her.

Fox Searchlight made a very good decision picking up this film for a paltry $10.5 million at Sundance this year. Hopefully, this means audiences can expect more from the directors and screenwriter Michael Arndt.
